I recommend that you buy graphics software which fits your needs and which you can afford. Try Jasc Paint Shop Pro if your main need is for web graphics, it's very affordable and packs quite a punch for the price! If you need heavy duty commercial use including print media, then you should invest in Adobe Photoshop 6.0

Here's the way I create transparent background images in Photoshop (v. 5 or older):

1. create your image however you like, using layers, etc.. making sure you use a solid web-safe color for the background which will best match the background color or image on your web page, then save the file in .psd format.

2. Use "Image > Mode > Indexed" menu, it will ask you "flatten layers?", choose "OK".

3. Now you will get another dialog box in which you can specify how you want the colors saved. For most web graphics, I like to keep the file as small as possible, begin by choosing

Click "OK"

4. If the image looks OK to you continue to step 5. If it looks really bad, use "Edit > Revert" to get back your original file, then use a higher Color Depth and number of colors.

5. When the image looks good, export by using "File > Export > GIF89a" This is where you can choose your transparent color. use the cursor (which will have changed to a dropper tool) and click over the background color. If it looks pixelated, click on one or more of the leftover colors in the background (sometimes the dithering affects the background color), you can keep the default selection of "interlacing" or uncheck this (it makes the image load in large blocked in areas which gradually become clearer as the image loads... it adds a little bit to the file size, too). Click OK.

Name the file and choose where to save it and you are done... =)
